Australia news live: Accused double murderer Beau Lamarre-Condon’s mother granted bail

world

According to The Guardian, Australia's defence minister Richard Marles says the government is deeply concerned by a long-range missile test that China has described as nuclear-capable. Marles said he doubted the test was a direct response to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese travelling to the Pacific to sign a new defence alliance with Fiji, but framed it as evidence of China's growing reach. He called the demonstrated ability to deploy a nuclear weapon over a much greater range deeply destabilising, and pointed to what he described as a dramatic military buildup carried out without strategic reassurance to Australia's neighbours. In his words, there really isn't an explanation for why China is building these capabilities.
