US charges Indian criminal gang leader with organising murder of Canadian Sikh activist

According to The Guardian, US authorities have charged the leader of an Indian criminal group over the 2023 assassination of a prominent Sikh independence activist in Canada. Prosecutors accuse Lawrence Bishnoi, who is already imprisoned in India, of orchestrating the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was fatally shot outside a temple where he served as president. Bishnoi's childhood friend, Satinderjeet Singh, is also charged but has not been apprehended. The Guardian notes the killing strained diplomatic relations between Canada and India at the time.
