Disability benefits in England and Wales not fit for purpose, Timms review to find
politics
According to The Guardian, a landmark government review is set to conclude that disability benefits in England and Wales are, in its words, not fit for purpose. The review, led by the disability minister Stephen Timms, will call for the entire assessment system to be redrawn as part of a broader welfare overhaul. The Guardian understands the review finds the current points-based system effectively worthless, in large part because of a rising number of new conditions — particularly mental health conditions — whose severity can fluctuate considerably. Critics quoted in the reporting describe the existing assessments as dehumanising.
