According to The Guardian, Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in the United Kingdom, has been granted a posthumous conditional pardon. Ellis was executed in 1955 for a murder that the case has come to be associated with domestic abuse. The decision reopens one of the most contested chapters in the history of British capital punishment, decades after the death penalty was abolished.
