Atmosphere in Iran remains highly charged after Ayatollah’s funeral and escalation of grievances with US
world
According to The Guardian, the mood in Iran remains highly charged in the aftermath of the Ayatollah's funeral, as Tehran seeks to assert its independence amid rising tensions with the United States. At a foreign ministry briefing at the Grand Hotel Tehran, reporters were asked to stand for the national anthem before the spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, took the podium. Baghaei claimed the world was witnessing a turning point in the history of Shia Islam. A century from now, he said, the assassinated Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would be revered as a second Imam Hussain, the martyred grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, while Donald Trump would be remembered as a latter-day Yazid, the tyrannical seventh-century caliph.
