No evidence for ‘witches’ marks’ claims at old English buildings, historian says
other
Centuries of witchcraft folklore may rest on one big misunderstanding. Those 'witches' marks' found on medieval English churches and houses—carved symbols like daisy wheels—have nothing to do with witches or magical protection. So says a leading architectural historian, quoted by the Guardian. English Heritage and Historic England have long identified these marks as ritual protection symbols, but the historian argues there is absolutely no evidence for any mystical meaning at all. The marks are simply the working signatures left behind by medieval stonemasons.
