Mauritania's fishing heritage threatened by climate change and overfishing

world

For centuries, the Imraguen people of Mauritania have survived in one of the world's richest fishing grounds, the Banc d'Arguin, using wind-powered boats and fishing methods passed down through generations. But according to France 24, that traditional way of life is now under threat. Climate change is altering fish stocks and sea conditions. Overfishing is depleting the waters the Imraguen depend on. And perhaps most troubling, fewer young people are learning the ancestral knowledge that has kept the community alive for generations. Together, these forces are putting both the Imraguen's livelihoods and a unique cultural heritage at risk—one that, if lost, can never be fully recovered.
