Survey: Latino voters' political divide is becoming an identity divide
politics
According to Axios, a new Pew Research Center survey finds that Latino voters aren't just split over President Trump — they're divided over what being Latino even means to them. Among Latinos who backed Trump in twenty twenty-four, fifty-seven percent say what happens to other Latinos affects their own lives little or not at all. Among those who voted for Kamala Harris, seventy-five percent say it affects them a great deal or a fair amount. Trump voters are nearly twice as likely to describe themselves simply as American, while Harris voters more often use labels tied to country of origin, like Mexican American. One thing nearly everyone agrees on: barely one percent prefer the terms Latinx or Latine. Axios notes the old assumption that Latino works as a single political identity is breaking down — with no single Latino vote, and perhaps no single Latino identity behind it.
