Mexico threatens legal action over citizens' deaths in ICE custody

politics

According to Axios, Mexico says it will escalate its response to the deaths of its citizens in U.S. immigration custody, moving beyond diplomatic channels to file criminal complaints directly with American prosecutors. Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Álvarez announced the plan Thursday, and President Claudia Sheinbaum said the government cannot neglect Mexicans who have died in ICE operations or detention. Axios reports that fourteen Mexican nationals have died in ICE custody since President Trump returned to office, with three more killed during ICE operations. Overall, the outlet cites tracking that counts nineteen immigrant deaths in custody so far in twenty twenty-six and thirty-one last year. A Homeland Security official disputed any surge, telling Axios there has been no spike and putting the in-custody death rate at zero point zero zero eight percent of detainees. Mexico says it has already sent eleven formal protest notes and may also seek an inter-American human rights investigation.
