Criticism against "unembedded FDT" doesn't apply to FDT

other

According to LessWrong, critics are arguing against Functional Decision Theory—a framework for rational decision-making—using premises that contradict the theory itself. FDT assumes you're 'embedded' in your universe, part of it. But critics use thought experiments where you're 'unembedded,' viewing the universe from outside and knowing you're not in a simulation. The post argues this is self-contradictory: you cannot be both inside and outside the system. These criticisms, therefore, don't actually challenge FDT. The author then reframes a classic decision puzzle with consistent embedded assumptions to show how rational agents should really think.
