Mechanosynthesis of Atomic Carbon Structures Using Inverted-Mode STM

science

Researchers have demonstrated a new approach to nanotechnology: building carbon structures atom by atom using a scanning tunneling microscope in inverted mode. Rather than relying on chemical reactions where molecules self-assemble, this mechanosynthesis technique uses the microscope's tip to directly position and manipulate individual atoms. According to Hackaday, this method could enable far more precise control over the resulting structures. It's a shift from throwing ingredients in a pot and hoping for the best, to picking up each atom and placing it exactly where you want it.
