Anthony Albanese will not attend Garma festival, despite vowing to attend every year as prime minister
politics
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is skipping this month's Garma festival, breaking a commitment made just a year ago. According to The Guardian, he had attended Australia's largest Indigenous cultural gathering—held in northeast Arnhem Land—every year since 2019 and vowed to keep doing so for the duration of his premiership. The absence breaks an explicit promise to the Yolŋu people and their annual celebration of Yolŋu culture.
