Abuse survivors launch bid to transfer claims to entity that benefited from Christian Brothers’ wealth
world
According to The Guardian, abuse survivors in Australia are pushing to hold a new entity financially responsible for claims against the Christian Brothers, a Catholic order with one of the worst clergy abuse records of any church body. The survivors want to make Edmund Rice Education Australia — which benefited from vast land and property transfers from the Christian Brothers — liable for compensation. Edmund Rice Education Australia does not consent to being named a defendant, and the Guardian reports the fight could be costly, with a Victorian judge hearing it has, in one lawyer's words, high court written all over it. The order is facing hundreds of current and future abuse cases estimated to be worth seven hundred seventy-four million dollars.
