Meta's new AI image maker draws fire over consent

ai

According to Axios, Meta has launched Muse Image, a new AI feature that lets users generate pictures using the likenesses of people with public Instagram accounts. The process requires no notification to the people whose faces are used—and they have to actively opt out if they don't want their likeness included. That opt-out model is drawing criticism from privacy advocates and the entertainment industry. Public Citizen called it an "egregious invasion" of privacy. Talent agency CAA is demanding affirmative consent instead, arguing people should explicitly approve before their likeness is used. SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, is telling members to opt out immediately to protect their faces. Meta says the tool has safeguards to block violent, sexual, and defamatory imagery. The company's AI chief told Axios they're considering the feedback, but the policy hasn't changed—leaving it to users to protect their own likenesses.
