According to France 24, statues of the 17th-century king Shivaji have been erected across several Indian cities in recent years by Hindu nationalist groups, who cast him as a symbolic defender of Hindus against Muslims. France 24 frames the campaign as another act of intolerance toward the country's Muslim and Christian minorities, which it says have been targeted since the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power twelve years ago.
