French farmers race to adapt as repeated heatwaves hit crops and livestock
world
France's farmers are scrambling to cope after repeated heatwaves battered crops and livestock. RFI English reports that weeks of searing heat and drought could shrink the country's maize harvest by a third this year, which would make it the smallest in thirty-five years. The toll on poultry has been steep too: between two and a half and three million broiler chickens died within a few days during the June heatwaves, and farmers are still tallying the losses.
