U.S. and Iran trade strikes after IRGC declares Strait of Hormuz "closed"

According to Axios, the U.S. military launched strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, responding to an Iranian Revolutionary Guard missile attack on a commercial cargo ship. The strikes targeted Iranian air and surface-surveillance radars, missile storage, and drone launch facilities—the third round of U.S. attacks on Iran this week. The IRGC missile struck a Cyprus-flagged container ship, causing significant engine-room damage and an onboard fire, with one crew member missing. In response, Iran declared the Strait of Hormuz "closed until further notice," defying a Trump administration demand issued Friday that Iran guarantee safe passage through the waterway. The escalation threatens a U.S.-Iran agreement signed last month, and comes after diplomatic talks Saturday aimed at resolving the standoff.
