New LS Lowry exhibition aims to demolish ‘naive and uncultured’ myth

Per The Guardian, a Manchester gallery is opening a new exhibition to challenge what it sees as deep misconceptions about LS Lowry. Featuring one hundred forty paintings, The Theatre of Life argues that the industrial-era artist has been wrongly dismissed as naive and uncultured. Lowry spent decades capturing working-class life in the industrial northwest of England—a body of work the gallery says deserves a far more serious reading than it's traditionally received.
