Mexican government unveils a prototype for a new homegrown, ultra-affordable EV
business
Mexico just unveiled its homegrown electric car strategy. President Claudia Sheinbaum drove out the Olinia Uno on Sunday—a six-seater built for city driving, with a one hundred twenty-five kilometer range and a roughly eight thousand five hundred dollar price tag. It charges on a standard home outlet, like a microwave. According to Gizmodo, the car is part of Plan Mexico, a six-year economic initiative positioning the country as a manufacturing hub. Mexico plans two thousand charging stations across major cities, with a goal to boost domestic content from fifty to seventy-five percent by twenty thirty. The timing is significant: China dominates global EV markets while the US has abandoned federal EV subsidies. Mexico's strategy is to offer practical, affordable vehicles for emerging markets—a move that could reshape the region's automotive future.
