Book reviews are disappearing from American newspapers. According to Nieman Lab, the Washington Post shuttered Book World in February, the Associated Press stopped publishing reviews last fall, and major metro dailies continue cutting their literary coverage. But one independent bookstore has decided not to accept this void. Instead of watching literary journalism disappear, they've launched their own book review publication. It's a modest response to a significant loss: when mainstream news outlets abandon a cultural function, sometimes smaller institutions step in to preserve it.
