Remembering tenacious, ubiquitous Lindsey Graham

politics

Axios reports that Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, has died at seventy-one, after what his office described as a brief and sudden illness. Graham first drew national attention in nineteen ninety-nine as one of the House managers in President Bill Clinton's impeachment trial, then won a Senate seat in two thousand two and became a reliable defender of President George W. Bush. His closest ally was the late Senator John McCain, with whom he shared a hawkish worldview and a deep distrust of Vladimir Putin. In the Trump era, Axios notes, Graham forged a close relationship and golfing partnership with the president, though the two often diverged over Russia, with Graham pressing for tougher sanctions.
