Under South Carolina law, Governor Henry McMaster may appoint a temporary replacement to fill the now-vacant seat. Because Graham had won his party's primary last month and was up for re-election this year, a special primary will follow to choose a new nominee, with the general election winner taking office in January for a full six-year term.
