Germany records nearly 100 drowning deaths, many of them young men, in June heatwave
world
The Guardian reports that nearly one hundred people drowned in Germany last month as an intense heatwave gripped western Europe. Official figures put the toll at ninety-nine deaths in June, the largest share of them young men, making it Germany's worst drowning toll in more than twenty years. Temperatures climbed as high as forty-one point seven degrees Celsius in some areas, and the same extreme heat has been blamed for hundreds of excess deaths across the region, even forcing an early closure of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
