Lindsey Graham’s sudden death sends shockwaves through Congress as politicians mourn and mull his replacement – live

politics

The Guardian reports that Lindsey Graham, the Republican senator from South Carolina, has died suddenly at the age of seventy-one after what his office described as a sudden illness. A long-serving figure on Capitol Hill and a close ally of President Trump, Graham drew an outpouring of mourning from colleagues across Congress. Trump has said it is too soon to name a possible replacement. Under South Carolina law, Governor Henry McMaster may appoint someone to temporarily fill the vacant seat, followed by a special primary and a general election, with the winner taking office in January for a full six-year term. Graham had won his party's primary just last month and was up for re-election this year.
