Lindsey Graham’s sudden death sends shockwaves through Congress as politicians mourn and mull his replacement – as it happened

politics

The Guardian reports that Lindsey Graham, the long-serving Republican senator from South Carolina, has died suddenly at the age of seventy-one following what his office described as a sudden illness. His death leaves an immediate vacancy on Capitol Hill, and under South Carolina law, Governor Henry McMaster may appoint a temporary replacement to fill the seat. Because Graham had won his party's primary last month and was up for re-election this year, the Guardian notes there is now also an opening in the Republican nomination. State law calls for a special primary within weeks, with the general election winner taking office in January to begin a full six-year term.
