Keystone pipeline operator agrees to pay $26.9m penalty over Kansas oil spill

The Guardian reports that South Bow, the Canadian operator of the Keystone pipeline, has agreed to settle federal and state violations of clean water laws. The company will pay twenty-six point nine million dollars in civil penalties and invest about forty million dollars in safety improvements. The settlement stems from a December 2022 rupture that dumped nearly thirteen thousand barrels of crude oil into a creek in rural Kansas, roughly one hundred fifty miles northwest of Kansas City.
