Shabana Mahmood tells MPs suspect in Ann Widdecombe investigation ‘not known to Prevent’ – UK politics live

The Guardian reports that the UK government is moving to effectively proscribe Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, using new powers under the National Security State Threats Act of twenty twenty-six. The IRGC is the Iranian regime's powerful military and security force, which Britain says has been linked to threats to life and intimidation on UK soil. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood set out the designation to Parliament, which creates new criminal offences for supporting or benefiting from the group, carrying a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Successive governments had resisted the step for years, arguing that laws written to target terrorist organisations were difficult to apply to a body run by a state.
