Senate looks to honor Graham with Russia sanctions
politics
Axios reports that senators from both parties are rallying around a revised Russia sanctions package to honor the late Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, whose sudden death has, at least briefly, revived a rare moment of bipartisanship. Majority Leader John Thune called passing the bill, which has eighty-five cosponsors, a fitting tribute, while Minority Leader Chuck Schumer urged him to bring it to the floor immediately. The updated legislation keeps the spirit of Graham's original effort but narrows its scope, softening penalties that would have imposed tariffs of up to five hundred percent on countries still buying Russian oil and gas. Meanwhile, Graham's sister, Darline Graham Nordone, was appointed to serve out the remainder of his term.
