Curiosity Blog, Sols 4941-4947: (Pin)Stripes on the Fourth of July

science

Curiosity, NASA's long-running Mars rover, spent this week crossing a major geologic boundary, transitioning from smooth sandy terrain into an area of rougher bedrock. The rover discovered beautifully exposed rock outcrops with distinctive pinstriped layers, and NASA reports the discovery offers another window into Mars' geologic history. The rover's suite of instruments—laser spectroscopy, X-ray analysis, and high-resolution cameras—is now examining the composition and structure of this bedrock formation at the base of Mount Sharp.
