What’s a ‘sleep debt’? Can I ever pay it back? An expert explains

health

Per The Conversation (Australia), the widely popular concept of 'sleep debt' is largely a myth. While sleep pressure does build the longer you're awake, and you will sleep longer and deeper for a night or two after a shortfall, your body doesn't force you to repay lost sleep hour for hour. When faced with less sleep, your system adapts—it protects your deepest, most restorative sleep stages and falls asleep faster. Your sleep itself stabilizes after a few nights of recovery sleep. But here's where it gets tricky: cognitive performance takes longer to bounce back. Even after you've had all the recovery sleep you'll get, you still need several more nights of normal sleep before focus and alertness fully return. There's another catch: negative feedback about your sleep—like a wearable saying your sleep was poor—can actually amplify fatigue and anxiety the next day. And fundamentally, no one knows precisely how much sleep they need. It varies from person to person, shifts with seasons, and changes if you're sick or intensifying exercise. Sleep trackers estimate both what you slept and what you need. Bottom line: your body is built to handle short sleep and recover naturally. There's no need to chase zero.
