First Thing: Trump threatens to impose US tolls on Hormuz shipping as strikes on Iran continue
world
The Guardian reports that the United States has launched a third consecutive night of strikes on Iran, hours after President Trump said Washington would reinstate a maritime blockade and charge ships for safe passage through the strait of Hormuz. The UAE said two of its tankers were hit by Iranian cruise missiles in the strait's southern lane, killing one Indian crew member and wounding eight others, four of them seriously. Trump said on Monday the US would demand a twenty percent tariff on all cargoes moving through the waterway, reversing Washington's earlier insistence that the strait stay open to all without tolls. The escalation comes as an interim ceasefire meant to open talks on a permanent end to the war has all but collapsed, raising fears among world leaders that the conflict could fully resume.
