Private investment in fusion firms jumps by $4.5bn

science

Physics World reports that private fusion companies raised nearly four point five billion dollars over the past year — a seventy percent increase. The Fusion Industry Association's report also shows the sector now employs over sixteen thousand people worldwide, predominantly in the U.S. and Europe. Nearly half the surveyed companies use magnetic confinement, while others pursue inertial confinement or hybrid techniques. Applications extend beyond electricity: companies are targeting space propulsion, marine propulsion, hydrogen production, and industrial heat. The funding surge reflects major rounds: Commonwealth Fusion Systems raised eight hundred sixty-three million dollars last year, while Helion Energy, Proxima Fusion, and Inertia Enterprises combined for one point five billion this year. A significant milestone: General Fusion became the first fusion company to list on the Nasdaq, raising one hundred fifty million dollars for its Lawson tokamak programme, expected to complete by twenty twenty-eight. Confidence has notably surged — seventy-one percent of surveyed companies now expect commercial fusion electricity to reach the grid by the twenty thirties.
