A home sequencing enthusiast named Bradley Woolf has run their genome through an Oxford Nanopore Technologies MinION—five times, in fact. The whole process, from DNA sample to sequencing and analysis, takes roughly two months and quite a bit of lab material investment. Per Adafruit Blog, costs remain prohibitive for most people right now, but as prices drop exponentially, genetic sequencing could eventually become as common and affordable as smartphones, offering everyday people real-time insights into their own genetics.
