Hillsborough law symbolises new era as power passes from Starmer to Burnham

politics

The Guardian reports that a new Hillsborough law has come to symbolise a shift in power within Labour, from Prime Minister Keir Starmer toward Andy Burnham, described as the PM-in-waiting. The bill marks a full-circle moment for Burnham, who has said his first steps out of Westminster came in 2009, when he walked out to address furious Liverpool fans at the Kop on the twentieth anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. According to the Guardian, the crowd chanted "Justice for the 96" for a full two minutes before the then culture secretary could continue, a display of anger that no one in public office had been convicted over the tragedy.
