A new review of the SAT at University of California is coming by June 2027

other

The University of California will review the role of standardized testing in admissions by June next year, according to CalMatters. Some news outlets reported confusion this week after the academic senate appeared to have canceled the review, but university officials clarified it's still moving forward—just on a faster timeline. More than two thousand UC STEM professors have signed a petition pushing to reinstate the SAT, arguing that high school grades alone don't adequately measure college readiness. But the UC Student Association—representing two hundred thirty-seven thousand undergraduates—opposes the move, noting that diversity has actually increased since the SAT was banned in twenty twenty, and graduation rates have remained stable. Access advocates also warn that standardized tests have historically disadvantaged lower-income students. Only the Board of Regents can actually restore the SAT to admissions, and any policy change would require multiple board meetings and formal votes.
