Australia news live: Bill Shorten says anti-immigrant politics a sign of ‘creeping cultural dementia’; man found dead in car after Sydney shooting

politics

Former Labor leader Bill Shorten, now vice-chancellor of the University of Canberra, says he was shocked by testimony given to Australia's royal commission on antisemitism. According to The Guardian, Shorten told the inquiry that evidence from the university sector describes an Australia and a set of campuses he doesn't recognise, and that the voices coming forward leave no excuse to ignore what they reveal. He drew a hard line at protesters who cover their faces to avoid being identified or who confront people at their individual offices, calling that not protest but bullying, thuggery, and intimidation. No cause, he added, gives anyone the right to make someone else's life that fearful.
