News live: Jane Hume says Australia should be ‘encouraging’ datacentres and claims PM’s plan to regulate AI may stifle innovation

politics

Liberal deputy leader Jane Hume said Australia should be actively encouraging datacentres, warning that the Prime Minister's plans to regulate artificial intelligence could stifle innovation. According to the Guardian, Hume believes datacentres will power Australia's productivity boom. Separately, former Labor leader Bill Shorten, now vice-chancellor at the University of Canberra, responded to a royal commission investigating antisemitism by expressing shock at university sector testimony. Shorten said that recent evidence revealed incidents of intimidation and bullying — including activists covering their faces to hide identity and targeting individuals in their offices — behavior he said crosses the line from protest into cowardice and thuggery.
