New Mexico AG, federal DOJ clash over Epstein records

politics

A public dispute between New Mexico's attorney general and the U.S. Justice Department escalated on Tuesday over records tied to the state's Jeffrey Epstein investigation, Axios reports. Attorney General Raúl Torrez accused the federal DOJ of hindering his inquiry by withholding unredacted files connected to Epstein's former Zorro Ranch outside Santa Fe, and his office said the department's Southern District of New York office had called to say it would not cooperate. A DOJ spokesperson called that characterization false, saying federal law, court orders, and privacy protections for victims and witnesses bar the release of millions of unredacted documents regardless of any deadline. Torrez has given the department until July thirty-first to respond before pursuing what he calls all available legal remedies.
