Maine shooting adds to growing immigration enforcement death toll

Axios reports that the fatal shooting of Johan Sebastián Guerrero by federal immigration officers in Maine adds to a growing death toll from the Trump administration's nationwide immigration crackdown. According to the Department of Homeland Security, an officer opened fire on a vehicle leaving a home ICE was watching, saying the officer feared for public safety, though immigrant advocacy groups say Guerrero was authorized to work in the U.S. Axios notes his death came just days after Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed by ICE agents in Houston, one of several people shot while in their cars, and in some cases video evidence appears to contradict officials' claims that victims used their vehicles as weapons. In a letter to Maine's congressional delegation on Wednesday, Governor Janet Mills wrote that ICE needs to be fundamentally reformed, and if not, abolished.
