Pont de la Bâtiaz in Martigny, Switzerland

other

Per Atlas Obscura, Switzerland's Pont de la Bâtiaz is the last wooden bridge in Valais that can handle cars. Built in the thirteen hundreds, it's survived centuries of destruction—severe flooding in the sixteen hundreds and a glacier break in the eighteen hundreds. The current version, built in eighteen twenty-nine using larch wood arches, is also Valais's only remaining arched bridge. Reinforced in nineteen twenty with timber trestles, it remains the main route to the Chateau de la Bâtiaz on the mountainside. For nearly seven hundred years, travelers have been using this bridge to reach the castle—a medieval path that remains one of Martigny's most popular attractions today.
