Bird flu has reached New Zealand – what this means and what comes next

health

Highly pathogenic avian influenza—H five N one—has reached New Zealand for the first time, detected in a seabird. Australia experienced the same arrival about four weeks ago, giving the region time to prepare. Infections in Australia so far have been limited to seabirds, with no spread to poultry, but the concern is transmission among dense bird populations and to marine mammals, including the New Zealand sea lion. The Conversation reports that New Zealand has spent recent years strengthening its surveillance systems, and researchers are now vaccinating critically endangered native bird species against the virus. The question now is whether this represents a single arrival or the beginning of wider circulation in the region.
