Ontario Wildfire Smoke Moves East

Satellite imagery from Thursday shows smoke from Ontario wildfires drifting southeast across parts of Quebec and into the U.S. Midwest and Northeast. NASA Earth Observatory reports that Ontario had more than 180 actively burning fires by mid-July, part of roughly 850 fires across Canada. The smoke tinted skies gray and yellow, turning the sun orange in many areas, and degraded air quality to unhealthy levels in Toronto. Evacuation orders were issued for several communities in Northwestern Ontario, where eight blazes saw rapid growth, and a concurrent heat wave is compounding health risks for people in the region.
