Moroccan intelligence insider reveals widespread use of Pegasus hacking software

A former member of Morocco's domestic intelligence service provided previously unrevealed details on Thursday about the country's use of Pegasus spyware. The Guardian reports the surveillance campaign targeted journalists, human rights defenders, French politicians, and Spanish cabinet ministers and police officers, with deployments dating back to two thousand seventeen. Pegasus, manufactured by Israel-based NSO Group, allows its operator to access emails, messages, and photographs on a target's phone — it can also remotely activate the microphone and camera, turning the device into a listening device. The disclosure offers unprecedented insight into how a north African government conducted systematic surveillance against media and civil society.
