British Steel's Scunthorpe steelworks has formally shifted to public ownership, expropriated from its Chinese owner, Jingye. The Guardian reports the government acted under legislation that received Royal Assent this week. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the takeover was in the national interest — safeguarding the facility and around four thousand jobs from closure. The decision marks one of the last significant actions of his premiership.
