How a fuming Trump reversed ICE's pause on vehicle stops
politics
Axios reports that President Trump swiftly overrode a Department of Homeland Security decision to pause the kind of ICE vehicle stops tied to two fatal shootings over the past two weeks. According to Axios, DHS had paused the stops to give agents more training, but within about twelve hours Trump reversed the move in a Truth Social post, leaving DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and border czar Tom Homan to explain the whiplash. The reversal revived a tense internal debate over how to weigh public pressure to curb the violence against Trump's push for tougher enforcement and more deportations. The initial pause followed a plea from Maine Senator Susan Collins after the shooting of a Colombian national in her state. Maine Senator Angus King warned that undoing it could lead to additional deaths, calling it a mistake that may prove tragic.
