DHS Plans “All-Out War” on Immigration Scammers as Fraud Complaints Double

On Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security announced an investigation into sophisticated immigration fraud schemes targeting vulnerable people in immigration proceedings. Federal data analyzed by ProPublica shows the scale: victims reported at least ninety-four point four million dollars stolen over five years, in more than six thousand two hundred complaints. The scams work by impersonating immigration lawyers on social media and WhatsApp, charging large sums for fake filings and claims of help avoiding in-person court hearings. Some use AI-generated deepfake videos of real attorneys. Scammers primarily target Spanish speakers anxious about immigration enforcement, often impersonating organizations like Catholic Charities USA. DHS is declaring an 'all-out war' on the fraudsters, but enforcement experts call the challenge a Whac-a-Mole problem—new accounts appear faster than regulators can remove them.
