How green is Andy Burnham? Britain’s next PM faces tough climate decisions
politics
Britain's likely next prime minister is heading into office with the climate crisis looming and his own plans still unclear. According to The Guardian, Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, stands on the threshold of Number 10 just as wildfires blanket his city in smoke. The paper notes that three heatwaves so far this year have killed thousands of people in England and Wales, damaged harvests, and left children crying in classrooms, while pressure builds over high energy prices, reindustrialisation, and North Sea drilling. One environmental campaigner at the Green Alliance thinktank told the paper that Burnham has been very quiet on climate so far, though that doesn't necessarily mean he intends to soften the agenda.
