How the trend for turning front gardens into driveways is adding to night-time heat

Over the past two decades, households have increasingly replaced front gardens with paved driveways—a shift raising new concerns among climate researchers. In two thousand five, roughly eight percent of UK front gardens were fully paved; by two thousand fifteen that had tripled to twenty-four percent. Today, around fifty-five percent are paved over. Here's why it matters: asphalt and similar hard surfaces absorb up to ninety-five percent of incoming solar radiation, storing heat during the day and slowly releasing it after sunset—a process known as the urban heat island effect. In contrast, grass and trees stay much cooler through natural evaporation. The result is city temperatures one to three degrees Celsius warmer than the surrounding countryside, especially during nights. The human impact is measurable: researchers found nearly four hundred of seven hundred eighty-five heat-related deaths in Greater London during the two thousand eighteen summer were linked to this nighttime heat phenomenon. Restoring green space—particularly by planting trees—can lower nighttime temperatures by up to one degree Celsius and daytime temperatures by up to three degrees. Research suggests increasing urban greenery by just ten percent could lower average air temperatures by around half a degree.
