Want to build audience and revenue through live events? These five news nonprofits have some ideas to get you started
business
Per Nieman Lab, five nonprofit newsrooms are turning live events into audiences and revenue generators. The Swampscott Tides hosted a Moth-style storytelling evening that generated thirty thousand dollars in profit by its second year. The 51st in Washington, D.C., created a trivia game show centered on local culture that's building their subscriber base. El Paso Matters organized a nine point one five kilometer run inspired by the local area code, nine fifteen, attracting over six hundred signups in its first year. Across these experiments, a pattern emerged: success came from leaning into what each newsroom uniquely offered their community, partnering with local sponsors and venues, and reaching audiences where they already gather.
