Even Chemical Bonds Obey Einstein’s Relativity

Hackaday reports on a finding from Brown University: Einstein's theory of relativity affects chemical bonds even at the atomic scale. Using photoelectron spectroscopy, researchers studied very heavy elements, particularly bismuth, and found that relativistic effects blur the distinction between sigma and pi chemical bonds, creating a hybrid type instead. The discovery suggests that triple bonds in heavy elements are stronger than we previously understood.
